Bearing Maintenance: Extending Service Life and Enhancing Performance

Deep groove ball bearings are simple in design and widely applicable, and are extremely common in general-purpose equipment such as electric motors, fans, agricultural machinery and light industrial machinery. Proper maintenance can significantly improve the operational stability of the equipment and extend the service life of the bearings. The following outlines key maintenance points across four areas: daily inspections, lubrication maintenance, cleaning procedures and storage management.

Daily inspections: Nip problems in the bud and correct them promptly

Routine inspections form the cornerstone of deep groove ball bearing maintenance, enabling the timely identification of potential issues and the implementation of corrective measures. During operation, attention should be paid to changes in bearing temperature; an infrared thermometer may be used to periodically measure the temperature of the outer ring. Under normal conditions, the difference between the bearing temperature and the ambient temperature should not exceed 40°C. If the temperature rises abnormally, this may be caused by insufficient lubrication, overloading or internal faults, and the machine must be shut down for investigation.

At the same time, listen carefully to the sound of the bearing in operation. During normal operation, the sound should be even and steady. If abnormal noises such as periodic humming, clicking or grinding occur, this may indicate damaged balls, a loose cage or wear, and prompt maintenance is required. Furthermore, observe the bearing’s vibration levels and use a vibration analyser to measure vibration parameters. If vibration values exceed the specified range, this indicates that the bearing may be suffering from wear, pitting or other issues, and further diagnosis and treatment are required.

Lubrication Maintenance: Reducing Friction and Noise, Extending Service Life

Lubrication is crucial for deep groove ball bearings, as it reduces friction, minimises wear, dissipates heat and reduces noise. Select an appropriate lubricant based on the bearing’s operating conditions, such as rotational speed, load and temperature. For low to medium speeds and standard loads, a general-purpose lithium-based grease is recommended, as it offers good stability and a wide range of applications; for high-speed, high-precision applications, low-noise, low-viscosity lubricating oils or synthetic greases may be selected, as these offer superior oxidation resistance and fluidity.

The lubrication method must also be chosen appropriately. Grease lubrication is most common for deep groove ball bearings; the filling volume should ideally occupy 1/3 to 1/2 of the bearing’s internal cavity, as overfilling can easily lead to overheating; in high-speed applications, oil lubrication or spray lubrication may be adopted to ensure adequate cooling and lubrication. At the same time, a scientifically sound lubrication schedule must be established. Under normal operating conditions, grease should be replenished or oil changed at regular intervals based on operating time; in harsh environments such as those with high dust levels or humidity, maintenance intervals should be shortened.

Cleaning: Removing dirt and grime to ensure performance

During operation, bearings are subject to contamination from dust, impurities and moisture, which can affect their precision and service life; therefore, proper cleaning is essential. Regularly clean the external surfaces of the bearing assembly, wiping the outer ring, end caps and sealing areas with a clean cloth to remove surface dust and oil residue. For bearings used in dusty or damp environments, the cleaning frequency should be increased accordingly.

For bearings requiring disassembly for maintenance, a thorough cleaning may be carried out. After removing the bearing, clean the interior using kerosene or a specialised cleaning agent to remove old grease, grinding debris and impurities. After cleaning, dry thoroughly with a clean air stream before refilling with approved lubricant. During this process, avoid contact between hard objects and the raceways or ball surfaces to prevent damage to precision.

Storage Management: Proper Storage to Prevent Deterioration

When bearings are not in immediate use, ensure proper storage management. Bearings should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated environment free from corrosive gases, with temperatures maintained between 10 and 30°C and relative humidity not exceeding 65%. Avoid contact with acids, alkalis and salts to prevent rust and corrosion.

During storage, bearings should be placed on dry pallets or shelves to avoid direct contact with the floor, thereby preventing moisture absorption and oxidation. Bearings of different models should be sorted and clearly labelled to facilitate management and retrieval. At the same time, regularly inspect stock bearings for signs of rust or damaged packaging, and address any abnormalities promptly.

The maintenance of deep groove ball bearings is a meticulous and important task. By carrying out daily inspections, lubrication maintenance, cleaning and storage management, bearing performance can be effectively maintained and service life extended, providing a reliable guarantee for the smooth operation of various general-purpose equipment.
